Sonya Smith Phillips

Sonya Phillips fell in love with Hot Springs, NC during a ladies’ camping trip in 2005. She has been visiting the area ever since and finally became a permanent resident when her and husband, TJ, bought a home in downtown Hot Springs five years ago. Both Sonya and TJ are avid hikers, and enjoy their town’s special connection to the hiking community, as Hot Springs is the first town that hikers trek directly through on the Appalachian Trail heading north. Sonya hiked half of the AT, over 1000 miles, in 2019. Her and TJ have plans to complete their AT journey, possibly in 2027; summer of 2026 is already reserved for backpacking in Iceland. Sonya is the Committee Head for Hot Springs Town & Trail Fest 2025, an event sponsored by Rebuild Hot Springs to celebrate local Appalachian culture, the progress made in the wake of Hurricane Helene, and the community’s special connection to the Appalachian Trail. When not on the trail, Sonya can be found bartending at Big Pillow Brewing, and spending her summers as a raft guide for French Broad Adventures, or paddleboarding down the French Broad river.
